Landing a first decorator role when you've never held a brush professionally in 2026 is harder than people assume. I've been mentoring folks through nontraditional paths for about three years now, mostly folks coming from ceramics or night security, and the one thing that keeps coming up is, the industry expects you to show up with a portfolio even when nobody's paid you to build one yet. I know a woman in Brisbane who got her start by documenting her own apartment reno on video, not polished, just honest process stuff, and that landed her six client calls in a month. But that feels like an exception, not a rule. The AI tools are cheap now for mockups and mood boards, which is great, but it also means every applicant's submission looks halfway decent, so standing out seems to come down to something else entirely. What I haven't been able to figure out from the outside is, is there a specific entry point community college cert, apprenticeship pipeline, or even a type of contractor who's actually willing to train, that's working for people right now without a contact in the trade. Because the advice to just network more sounds right but doesn't tell me where to show up.
