Honest question for anyone actually in this role. I've been reading about how people land their first managing director position, and most of it assumes you already have a few years of supervisory experience behind you. But what if you're coming from installing or stoking or, honestly, any frontline trade where you haven't formally managed anyone? I've seen people say just "network your way in," which is easy to write and hard to actually do, especially if your network is mostly other tradespeople rather than office-based decision-makers. So here's the thing I keep coming back to: is there a realistic path into that first director-level role with zero management experience, or do you essentially have to grind through middle management for years regardless? No idea if that's still true in smaller companies versus bigger ones, but I'd rather hear from people who've actually done it.
